how 2 go fast!; importance of brakes

hi,
a couple of track incidents lately got me 2 post dis. in order 2 go fast - u have 2 stop fast. dat means u have 2 control n have good brakes.
as all of the current bikes nowadays r hydraulic operated. a lot of riders than 2 focus on the brake pads n overlook the brake fluid.
in the climate we r in - hot n humid, water absorption by the brake fluid is high so the fluid will lose its properties n not function as well. sometime resulting in brake fade.

i personally change all my bikes brake fluid abt every 6 weeks.
take note dat while dot3 n dot 4 brake fluids have a higher boiling point -they also absorb moisture at a faster rate 2.
dot 5 has a higher resistance 2 moisture absorption but a lower boiling point.
always use brake fluids from a seal container 2.

It'z always good to change the brake fluid when u know ur going for a hard ride. hard braking heats up the brakes fast. old brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. heat will boil the water and turn into air. VAPOUR LOCK! Simple terms spongy brakes. I change mine every track day.
Life's a Journey..... Go ride some bikes!!!!!!!!

as wat djebel as said abt changing his every track day. ...the choice is always up 2 the rider. dis here is juz advice 2 the ppl reading here. don wait 2 be a victim of "spongy brakes or vapour lock" and regret. Bonk

remember, preventive measures go a long way in having a good riding day.

cheers

since we r onthe topic of brakes. here is some tip 4 the adjustment of the brakes. we start off with the rear brake. the height/level of the rear brake must be level with the footpeg. adjust it so dat u have feel/freeplay b4 the the pump action takes effect.
dis is important! u don 1 2 have a rear brake with on/off action.
if u still can get the disire action after adjusting the nuts on the rear brake clevis, check the caliper. sometimes the action might be sticky there esp on older bikes.

cheers

hi guys,
front brake set up......the front brake lever free play is important.many riders set it up so when they touch or squeeze the front brake it comes 2 full action n locks up. dis is dangerous as it encourages the front wheel 2 wash out while braking hard in2 the corners.
the correct way is 2 have abt 5 mm of frree play on the lever. measuring it from the ball end 2 the handle bar is the most accurate way.
adjust the lock screw till the front brakes reaches its full action juz b4 it touches yr fingers.
now u can safely dive in2 the corners with yr brakes on...knowing dat yr bike is slowing down n not worried abt locking up the front wheels.

cheers

Number of good points raised by Airtime and it brings to mind when I had the KTM 250F a couple of years back and Airtime made it clear that I was using too much rear brake looking at my worn brake disc. I thought what he said was rubbish first since I really liked to brake slide into corners but later gave it some thought and started using more and more and more front brake and now with a 450 I use A LOT OF FRONT BRAKE! And without the change in brake behavior I would be a lot slower just like 2 years ago....
Now considering an upgrade of the front brake caliper to get even more controllable front stopping power..

So thanks Airtime for giving me a hard time on my braking habits back in 2007!! notworthy

This also brings to mind the essence of a well setup fork but I guess that's being handled in different thread.. cheers

hi salleh_ts185,
u can use dot 5.1 on most jap bikes not a problem at all. its does not absorb moisture much compare 2 dot 3/4 brake fluids.
the set back would be a lower boiling point than dot 3/4.
if u don ride track or do hard, fast trails often it would be ok.
but if u r using a euro bike than its better off 2 use a dot 3/4 as wat is needed on the bike,

cheers

no worries abt the tip,bsriphet!
but juz try a change in brake pads materail,u would be surprised at how much change it would make.
m going 2 be trying out another aftermarket brand within the next couple of weeks. been using the original pads dat came with the bike 4 so long!
will give u a update after the test!

cheers

Yeah, pls share your findings! The stock ones are very good both on KTM and Honda.. I'm currently on Renthal on the rear though and they are very good, bit pricey but good feel and holding up really well.. prof
