Hi , Glad to see this forum has a vintage section. A few years back I bought a big pile of frames, engine parts, wheels and mixture of junk that looked like it should have been thrown in the trash. Over the last 3 years I have slowly built one almost complete bike, starting with the engine I made up a gearbox put new seals and bearing where i could. Made a seat, made brake parts, made up front axle, made up throttle cable and so on. The only thing I couldnt do for the last 1.5 years was make it start up! It has a very old and not so reliable system called points breaker ignition and its 6v! For the last 5months I have been messing around trying to make an electronic ignition but decided to give up after mediocre results last weekend. So on Monday night I put the old points back in, set the timing as good as I could without seeing it run, kicked it and hey presto off it went like a rocket! The exhaust is a straight through that tapers towards the tail, all one peice. When it fired up the whole street knew it was running, very loud! Hopefully I will get it out and take it for a ride around Nusajaya some day. Unfortunately I dont know how to post a picture of it so perhaps someone could help me with that one. My bike is a 1970 Sprite 405cc 2 Stroke Maybe about 50 bikes left in the world Most famous rider was Brad Lackey in the 60's Bike was a good handler and had decent power but had wretched reliability problems and poor quality control from UK factory. |

Yeah need to get a front fender from the UK, they are aluminium just like the side panels which are about 4mm thick! made the brake cables up on saturday at a really neat bike shop in Simpang Bedok. We fired it up outside as there was a lot of admirers looking at the bike. Once we fired it up the whole industrial block came out to see what the noise and smoke was! It was the first time I had ridden it and the first itme in 20 + years since it run last. It has deep down power but the clutch was slipping a bit so I didnt really open it up fully, was aslo scared too! |

There is another old bike that i am trying go see and hopefully buy but been unable to get there so far. there is one maico in Singapore too around 1980's 490, monster of a bike and still the quickest bike to date! No I am not from malaysia but some riders say i look like i am from malaysia because of my hairstyle, I am actually Scottish, you may have seen me at some of the MSSC events, I have a KTM 200 09 and a carry it on a trailer! |

No its not that one, the bike in your picture has a dead ignition which is hard to fix now. This bike is a 1980 enduro model so its 10 years younger than the sprite. Powerful but fragile, they got the nickname Maico Brako! There is another Maico 490 Evo in Singapore which was bought in Oz, very fast and powerful, unlikely it will be ridden. Anyone else got some vintage pics? Especially of bikes in Singapore |
