bike setting up is a very personal thing same bike, 2 different riders, same skill level, same weight, or maybe same height BUT! this 2 bike set up might be a day and night different. what to do when you just got a bike? be it new or used. just a quick one here. just got myself a used 2010 KTM 150sx i spent about 2mth setting up the bike stuff that i have done - a change of new gearbox oil (get a bottle of good 2t at the same time) - grease up all bolts, nuts, joints, etc - set up the bike suspension, race sag, etc - set the correct chain tension, PDS require abit more special setting, the chain need more slack, unless you own the new 2012 KTM with linkage - strip the carb for thorough cleaning + proper jetting for WOT riding (i dun wan a piston jam!) - tension all spokes properly, no loose spokes - pressure of clutch + brake lever (including the position) - fork position, how high or low will help in riding - clean out airfilter/ airbox + airboot - setting up out powervalve (for 2st only, of coz!) - proper torquing of critical bolts/ nuts i tink it is all about this so far. the rest will be just regular maintenance to follow up i believe Harold now can feel the different before and after setting up the bike right? do post up any question here and i will be glad to help, be it KTM or Jap bike. alright guys just a kick start on the jetting part, will be taking example from my bike a '10 KTM 150SX the carb was strip down for a thorough cleaning looking into the carb, the carb is still running with stock setup, but was almost ballpark use a carb cleaner for cleaning. ![]() main jet is #182, pilot jet is #42 airscrew is 1.5 turn out N=needle, NOZI, clip #2 plug is surprising #7 stock is suppose to be #9even with heat range #7 plug, it looks rich! the left is the #7 plug, right is #8 ![]() anyway, jetting process has started and it is only half way thru airscrew is best at 1.75 turns out (great response from idle circuit) NOZI, with #1 clip, the midrange response did improve slightly, but butt dyno. looks like i need a leaner needle for better jetting! anyway, for the plug, i just blonk in a #9, as riding a small bore machine, ya need to pin it and ya need it to keep it cool. i was riding the OTH in the above mentioned setup, not a 100% ideal jetting still. ================================================================== after visiting many old uncle bike shop along jln besar i found this hidden treasure ![]() heard it is the one and only piece in sg, and was from HRC 2stroke keihin carb wanna buy also can't buy it. anyway, i got the honour to use it to try it in my bike. hear it will boost the midrange tremendously. time to pull out the tool box again. |

finally back home!! had a enjoyable and fruitful day today. after the usual premixing ritual the bike got fire up, while doing the static testing at the track side, i can already feel the "power" i wonder how airtime can do this static test without disturbing his neightbour, really inconsiderate... i pity his neighbour... anyway, the first ride impression midrange power is improve tremendously! esp from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle, it is insane!! time to look at the top end power. now is #180, after testing a few round of plug chop test the MJ now settle at #185, with the plug burning perfectly at tan color now, the roll on throttle, from 1/8 - 1/4 is my headache ... out of corner in 2nd gear is bogging badly... turn the airscrew in out also not much help. switch to a smaller size pilot jet, trying it out, but it is still not what i want... finally, after meddling with the extreme airscrew setting, i found the way home. from #40 -> #45 is the key back home!! now, in 2nd gear outta the same corner, the torque have improve significantly. without the use of the power lever, it can chug my ass around without any issue now. as of now, this is the best jetting setup!! it feels like it gain about 2 horsie!! hi airtime sorry but this is the one and only piece of (HRC)factory needle in sg it is a carefully hand-ground down needle with special angle taper. you can't get it anywhere else now!

the burning of the heat range #9 plug (the coolest plug compared to #8 and #7) i got the bke with plug #7 and it was blackish everywhere. now with #9 plug in, and the burning is almost there (i prefer abit on the rich side though as i bounce off the rev limiter) just to keep the burning on the safe side. sorry for the unclear pic, if u look carefully, u can see there is about 1/4 black ring and 3/4 of brown ring before this, it is 3/4 black ring.
